All of our plant pots include drainage holes, while allowing excess water and moisture to drain from the soil out the bottom of the pot.

This helps prevent water from pooling at the bottom of the pot, which can cause overwatering, and issues like root rot, or other fungal diseases that will harm your plants.

Take your plant out of its pot. If it is in a ceramic or terracotta planter, you can simply place it into an appropriately sized pot and place it in your space.

If there is no separation between the soil and the pot, carefully remove the plant and the soil from the pot by the base of the stem at the strongest part of the plant.

After you have removed the soil from the pot, assess if it is the proper soil, and determine the root health.

If there is a weird, rotting smell from your roots, you will need to wash away the remaining soil from the roots, trim the infected roots, and repot completely.

Once you place the plant in its new pot, with new soil, wait to water it for a few days until the roots have taken a proper hold, to ensure it has the best chance to adapt to the new potting.

Certain plants need to be repotted more than others. Some plants, like Snake plants and Christmas Cacti, like being root bound in a small plant pot, whereas other plants can like a lot of growth for their roots.

A good metric for when your plant should be repot, is if its growth has slowed down, and roots are starting to poke out of the bottom of your plant pots drainage hole.

This means the plant is searching for more space and nutrients, and is ready for an expansion.

A lot of patience is required at the start of learning how to take care of your house plant.

Each individual plant is slightly different in their requirements, but a good start is to learn what its watering requirements are, and what its light requirements are.

While every plant has its own set of care parameters, lower maintenance plants can include: Snake plant, Spider plant, Pothos plant, ZZ plant and Palms.

When in doubt, find out what will be easiest for you. If you frequently forget to water plants, but keep your house at a consistent temperature, and have a window with a lot of sunlight, your low maintenance plant selection will be different than if you don’t have large windows, and you need something pet-friendly.

The best general soil is an all purpose indoor house plant soil.

There are specific mixes for palms, cacti and succulents that include a different composition of fertilizers, and more drainage.

For more demanding plants like orchids, or African violets, they will need specialized soil to promote healthy growth.

As you start to become more acquainted with houseplants, you can even start to mix up your own soil for specific plants, depending on how much drainage they need in plant pots, how much growth you want to see, and if you have an indoor outdoor plant.
